Dishwasher Removal and Installation

Always disconnect power before performing any repairs.
First shut the breaker off at the panel. Verify that the power is off to the dishwasher. Do this by checking with a voltmeter. A quick check of the control functions will usually indicate if the power has been cut. Next open the cabinet drawers under the sink. This is usually where you will find the water supply line. Shut the water supply off. Next have a small bucket or container ready.

Remove the drain hose from the dishwasher going to the sink drain. This is usually connected to a barbed fitting coming off the sink drain. A hose clamp holds this on. Remove this with a pair of pliers. This is where the container comes in. The hose will have some old wastewater in the hose. This hose may also have a clamp holding it against the bottom of the countertop. The hose will need to be removed from this. This is called a high loop. The purpose of the high loop is to create an air gap by keeping the hose above the drain fitting in order for gravity to drain any excess water out of the hose.

Next remove the toe kick of the dishwasher. The toe kick is usually held on by 4 screws. Set the toe kick aside.

The power connection is in a rectangular metal box located behind the toe kick. The cover is usually held on by one screw. Remove this screw. Remove the wire nuts from each connection. There should be a black wire, a white wire, and a green wire or bare wire.

The green or bare wire will be connected to a screw grounding the power to the frame of the dishwasher. Remove this screw and remove the 2 wire nuts from the box. The wires from the wire nut will untwist with pliers and pull them apart. Loosen the wire connector holding the wire in the box. Pull the power supply wire out of the box.

Find the water supply line. This usually located on one of the sides. Loosen the compression nut that connects the supply line. Once the nut is loosened slide up the hose. Grab the hose firmly at the supply connection slightly twist and pull the hose out. There will be some water left in this hose when removed.

Now depending on the type of installation you will either have 2 brackets and screws holding the dishwasher at the top screwed into the countertop. The other installation method is brackets are on the sides and screwed into the cabinets. Either type these screws will need to be removed. The brackets may fall off when the screws are removed. Note how the brackets are connected or snap a photo.

Now you may need to lower the feet slightly in order to slide it out of the opening. The feet and be turned with a socket from the top side. Be sure to loosen the jam nut first. Now slide the dishwasher out of the opening. To install a new dishwasher, prepare the unit by leveling it first and setting the height. Measure the height of the opening. Now if the floor is at a different level you will need to level the dishwasher after it is in the opening. Next bring the dishwasher height to ¼” less than the opening.

Be sure to keep the door plumb. Do this by adjusting the leveling feet. Start with the front and bring the back up until the front is plumb maintaining level side to side.

Then slide the dishwasher into the opening carefully routing the power wire and supply line under the dishwasher. The drain line will need to be pushed thru the hole in the cabinet that leads to under the sink. Be careful to keep all the insulation around the dishwasher in place. This insulation reduces the noise level of the dishwasher. Once the dishwasher is in place check the fit of the door by opening and closing.

Once satisfied with the alignment screw in the top or side mounting brackets. The dishwasher door jam is usually flushed up to the cabinets face.

Next connect the dishwasher supply line. Feed wire into electrical box and tighten connector. Connect each wire by matching the 2 black wires together and the 2 white wires also.

Next connect the bare or green wire to the dishwasher. This is usually identified by a green screw. Put metal cover back on box. Turn on water supply and check for leaks. Connect drain hose to drain barb, ensuring to keep a high loop configuration.

Align the toe kick panel and install the screws. Try dishwasher.
